John most often used transparency (slide) film underwater in his 35 mm Nikonos system; Nikon and Fuji digital and film systems for land use.  Now, he uses specially made underwater housings for his digital Nikon land equipment.  The underwater shots are all natural color without the use of filters. “Daylight balanced strobes are used for fill light during the day, and for total lighting at night,” he explained. “Water is much denser and absorbs daylight faster than air. Artificial lighting is needed to bring out the inherent colors of the creatures. Above water I’ll occasionally use a polarizing filter to cut down on glare.
